When asked what themes he returns to most often in his work, his answer was clear: determination and loss. His characters are always driven by something. They are building, pursuing, protecting, or fighting for a vision. Yet by the time the story concludes, something has shifted. Something has been sacrificed. Something that began with hope may have changed into something far more complicated.

At the heart of his storytelling is a quiet but persistent idea that belief shapes the emotional architecture of his world.

As a young reader, E.M. Frulla often found himself frustrated when authors over-defined their characters. He remembers imagining someone vividly in his mind, only to have the writer describe them in a way that erased his version entirely. That experience stayed with him.

Today, he approaches his writing differently. He intentionally leaves space within the narrative. His characters are morally grey, shaped by ambition, pride, grief, power, and survival. They are not designed to be universally loved or universally condemned. Instead, they are designed to be debated.

He shared something that perfectly captures this philosophy:

“One reader’s champion may be another reader’s antagonist.”

That is not a byproduct of his storytelling. It is the goal.

He believes storytelling should not control the reader’s conclusions. It should invite them to participate. When someone closes one of his stories, he hopes the feeling that lingers is a simple but powerful question:

“What comes next?”

Not because the story is unfinished, but because the world continues to breathe beyond the page.

The Origin of a World

The first spark for the world he is building came from an unexpected place: news of Saudi Arabia’s proposed Line City, a massive mirrored structure planned to stretch across the desert.

The ambition of the project fascinated him. The scale. The vision. The sheer boldness of attempting something so monumental.

That single idea ignited his imagination, and from there, the world began to expand.

In his fiction, a similar structure exists. But like many grand human undertakings, what begins as beautiful slowly reveals fractures. Corruption creeps in. Manipulation takes root. Systems meant to elevate society begin to serve different purposes.

The tension between intention and outcome becomes central.

What begins as innovation can evolve into control. What begins as hope can transform into leverage. And often, the people involved believe they are still doing good.

This is where his recurring theme returns.

Good intentions, without awareness, can decay.

Darkness with Balance

Although his stories explore grimdark landscapes and moral uncertainty, E.M. Frulla himself approaches life with optimism. He describes himself as outgoing, social, and positive. He believes that motivated individuals have the capacity to build what they desire. With the right mindset, meaningful conversations, strong connections, and a measure of persistence, progress is possible.

That contrast is important.

The darkness in his stories is not born from cynicism. It is born from examination. He is interested in what happens when ambition goes unchecked, when power shifts subtly, when determination crosses into obsession.

At the same time, he recognizes that ambition can build extraordinary things. Awareness is the difference.

He understands that a single action, whether positive or negative, can permanently alter how another person walks through their life. That awareness shapes both his characters and his own perspective.

Seeing Himself in Every Character

One of the most honest reflections he offered was that he sees himself in every character he writes.

The ambitious ruler.
The frustrated side character.
The hardened antagonist.
The idealist who slowly bends under pressure.

He recognizes that people are rarely one thing. In different seasons of life, we may embody strength, weakness, pride, vulnerability, clarity, or confusion. His characters reflect that layered reality.

He believes the key is balance. It is important not to hyperfixate on a single emotion or cement oneself to a singular identity. Awareness allows growth. Without it, a person may wake up years later realizing they have lived too narrowly.

This philosophy flows directly into his storytelling. His characters are not static symbols of good or evil. They are evolving individuals shaped by the consequences of their choices.

Building Before the Epic

E.M. Frulla is not rushing to release one massive standalone novel and hoping readers adapt to its scale. Instead, he is building his universe gradually through interconnected short stories. Each story expands the world, introduces new layers, and strengthens the foundation.

This approach allows readers to grow with the world rather than feel overwhelmed by it.

It also creates a dynamic relationship between author and audience. When readers express curiosity about a character’s future or hope for a particular storyline to continue, that feedback fuels his creativity. The world may originate in his imagination, but its expansion becomes collaborative.
