In what remains of post-apocalyptic Hamilton, Ontario, private detective Cooper Hart takes whatever job comes along, no matter how shady. Word on the street is crime boss Francis “Frankie” Ciccone is looking for him, but when a mysterious girl shows up on his doorstep begging for help in locating her missing brother, he takes the case. Then while poking around the forest near the Lower City looking for clues, he finds a body. Before he can tell his newest client the less-than-stellar news, he’s detained by a pair of cops itching for a fight.

As soon as Hart is released from custody, Frankie tracks him down, insisting that he investigate the savage murder of a dozen employees in his warehouse before his mob bosses find out. But as Hart begins to uncover the truth about the body in the woods and the ones in the warehouse, he learns the girl’s centuries-old secret—one that drops him on a fraying tightrope between the cops and the mob. If Hart wants to protect her, he’ll have to choose sides in the struggle for control of the Lower City.
