Leaving Brighton

A collection of post punk poems

ABOUT THE BOOK

How to introduce this stuff? I know it belongs to me and it has come from me but will it mean anything to you? Some of it is knocking on 40 years old, some of it is more recent and some is of dubious quality. But in many ways it is all connected one way or another. The ‘things’ that made me tap away at my typewriter back then are much the same as the ‘things’ that make me hit the keys of my laptop now. I am still 16 inside despite my body telling me a different story. The pills have changed from recreational to strictly medicinal but don’t ask me to supply you with further info in the form of a bio. They are mostly meaningless bollocks anyway. ‘Word Flutterer’ is what I usually write. Do you need to know more? The punk music is there in the background if you listen carefully but it is not fundamental to the plot. We get shaped by people, landscapes, experience, inanimate objects, sounds, smells, love, anger, loss, random shit. Try threading all of them together. They bind us like sinews giving us strength to contextualise our lives and find a space in which to exist in some relative mental comfort. Individuality and originality are difficult to attain without resorting to creative weirdness. We tried and failed when we dyed our hair and ripped our clothes and fastened ourselves back together with safety pins. We became statements that were swiftly commercialised as the music slid into mainstream territory. I don’t think we ever recovered from that sell out. So, how to introduce this stuff? I have no idea other than to write some nonsense to justify this ever coming to a digital device now cradled tenderly in your hand. Take care and be kind to your past. We don’t live there anymore although it still lives within us.
