Mindfulness, Real-World Reality, and the Power of Normal Teens

Modern young adult literature has long been dominated by extraordinary, beyond human characters. From chosen ones with magical bloodlines to dystopian heroes overthrowing empires, teens are routinely told that to matter, they must possess supernatural gifts, mystical armour, or cosmic destinies. Parallel to this, pop-culture hustle-culture teaches young people that worth is tied solely to relentless output, hyper-competition, and aggressive achievement.

We have built an unsustainable world for young people, quietly conditioning them to believe that their worth is measured by how close they can sail to the edge of exhaustion. Toxic hustle-culture whispers—and sometimes screams—that if a teen isn’t overloading their schedule with extra classes, numerous sports, leadership clubs, and side hustles, they are falling behind. It treats rest as a luxury rather than a biological necessity.

In my OSU Rising series, I wanted to offer a radical antidote to this relentless pressure. In a fight or high-stress situation, if a student overthinks, worries about failing, or gets trapped in the echo chamber of self-doubt, their body freezes or reacts defensively. True technique requires a mind calm enough to reflect reality accurately, completely present, and unburdened by past mistakes or future panic.

Translating that to the page, my characters have to learn that they cannot outthink or out-worry their real-world obstacles; they have to quiet the noise, drop the internal panic, and respond to life with clarity and deliberate presence. I want my readers to be reminded that stepping back to catch their breath isn’t quitting—it’s gathering the strength to move forward.

Real-World Relevance: The Power of Seeing Yourself Whole

Escapism has its place (and I enjoy reading fantasy myself), but when an entire literary genre tells young adults that they only matter if they possess magic rings, dystopian superpowers, or royal bloodlines, a dangerous subtext emerges: Your ordinary life isn’t interesting enough. It tells teens that their everyday grief, ordinary school hallways, and quiet family struggles are somehow second-tier.

The OSU Rising series rejects this notion entirely by holding up an authentic mirror to adolescent life. Without relying on fantasy themes, the narratives dive headfirst into the high-stakes emotional reality of growing up today: the paralysing weight of academic pressure, the complex labyrinth of social anxiety, shifting family dynamics, and the internal echo chamber of self-doubt. By placing ordinary teens in realistic environments, I want to validate their lived experiences.

I want to tell my readers:

Your tears are real, your victories matter, and you do not need to slay a dragon to be a hero in your own story.

Quiet Courage as the Ultimate Superpower: The Strength of the Unseen Win

Pop culture loves loud, cinematic bravery—the explosive moment where a hero saves the world with a flashy display of force. But real life rarely hands us
explosions; instead, it hands us quiet hallways, difficult conversations, moments of rejection, and the heavy morning weight of anxiety. Drawing from decades of martial arts instruction, I want to redefine what it means to be strong. True martial arts isn’t about aggression or dominating an opponent; it’s
about discipline, self-mastery, and grace under pressure.

In OSU Rising, the ultimate superpowers are mindfulness, emotional honesty, and the quiet courage to keep going when nobody is watching. My characters don’t need mystical armour to face their obstacles. They find their footing through deep breaths, accountability, and the quiet resilience it takes to believe in yourself, to try again after failing, and to choose self-kindness.

Writing contemporary realistic fiction for young adults is my way of stepping off the mat and into the classroom of everyday life. Our teens are already fighting battles we often don’t see, and they deserve stories that honour their reality instead of asking them to escape it. When we teach young people that their breath is their anchor, their choices are their power, and their ordinary lives are entirely worth fighting for, we give them something far more enduring than magic. We give them themselves.
