Episode 36: You’re Not Reading the Room. You’re Becoming It.

You're not reading the room. You're becoming it.

Listen along by pushing the green play button below:

There’s a moment you have felt more times than you can count. A conversation shifts. Someone’s tone changes. The pace picks up, or everything suddenly feels lighter. You notice it instantly, even if you cannot explain it.

And without thinking, you adjust. You hold back, or you lean in. Matching the pace and the mood. You respond in a way that feels almost automatic.

Most people call that awareness, but it’s not. it’s unconscious agreement.

You are not just noticing what’s happening around you. You are becoming part of it.

“You don’t just notice the energy. You start becoming it.”

And once you see that, you cannot unsee it.

You Already Know This, You Just Haven’t Named It

You don’t need to learn this concept because you have already been living it.

Think about how quickly your experience can change. One comment can shift your entire mood. One interaction can throw off your focus. One person can either drain you or sharpen you.

At the same time, you have also had days where everything felt aligned. Conversations flowed easily. You felt clear, focused, and completely yourself.

You were the same person in both situations, yet the experience was completely different.

That is not random.

You are constantly responding to what’s happening around you, not just with your thoughts but with your entire state. Your body reacts before your mind catches up. You tighten, or you relax. You withdraw, or you open up.

“Your experience isn’t just happening in your head. It’s happening in your state.”

Pause and Notice This

Take a moment and reflect on your own patterns.

Where do you naturally shrink? Where do you find yourself holding back, staying quiet, or pulling in?

On the other hand, where do you expand? Where do you feel more confident, more expressive, and more like yourself?

Most of the time, those shifts are not intentional. They are responses to what you are stepping into.

That awareness alone starts to change things.

Energy Does Not Stay Put

What’s happening around you does not stay separate from you. It moves through you.

Pressure builds and spreads. Frustration builds and spreads. Negativity builds and spreads.

However, the same is true for the opposite. Clarity spreads. Momentum spreads. Confidence spreads.

You have seen one person throw off the rhythm of an entire conversation. You have also seen one person bring everything back into focus without saying much at all.

That influence is always present.

“What’s around you doesn’t stay around you. It moves through you.”

The real question is whether you are aware of that movement or simply carried by it.

Where Most People Drift

Most people don’t decide how they are going to show up. Instead, they adjust in real time.

They let the tone of the conversation shape their voice, the pace of the moment shapes their thinking, and the mood of others determines how much of them shows up.

Sometimes that works in their favor, especially when the environment feels positive. Other times, it pulls them away from who they actually are.

Either way, they are not leading the experience. They are following it.

They are allowing the environment to set the tone for who they become in that moment.

“If you don’t decide who you’re going to be, the environment will decide for you.”

The Shift That Changes Everything

The shift is simple, but it requires intention.

You stop reacting in the moment, and you start deciding ahead of it.

Instead of asking, “What’s this going to feel like?” you begin asking, “How am I going to show up no matter what?”

That single decision changes everything.

Now you are no longer waiting to see what happens. You are setting the tone for how you move through it.

Why This Feels So Automatic

This pattern feels automatic because it’s.

You are wired to sync with people. When things speed up, you speed up, when things feel tense, you tighten and when things feel good, you relax into it.

You ride the wave, often without realizing that you are doing it.

As a result, instead of choosing your state, you inherit one.

“Most people don’t choose their state. They inherit it.”

You Can Interrupt It

There is always a moment where you can catch it. Something begins to pull you, and you feel the shift happening.

In that moment, you have a choice.

You can decide to stay clear, to slow things down. You can decide not to feed into what’s happening.

At the same time, when something feels good, you don’t have to sit back and rely on it. You can build on it.

You can bring more presence. More intention. More clarity.

Now you are not just responding to your environment. You are shaping it.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

I watched this play out in real time this week, and it made everything click on a deeper level.

My husband had a moment where something shifted. He realized that he didn’t have to take on everything happening around him and he could choose how he showed up.

He could adjust his energy and decide who he was going to be instead of reacting in the moment.

Once he saw that, he started applying it in small ways. He handled conversations differently, catching himself when something started to pull him. He chose not to feed into patterns he normally would have followed.

What stood out the most was not just what he avoided. It was what he leaned into.

He started building on what was working, he became more present when things felt good and he added to the momentum instead of just receiving it.

The people around him were the same. The situations were the same. However, the way he moved through them was completely different.

One night, he came home energized and excited. He told me, “I just channeled my inner Jody.”

I laughed, but I knew exactly what he meant.

He did not change his environment. He changed how he showed up within it.

I am not sure I have ever seen him so happy. It was not because everything went perfectly. It was because he was no longer being pulled in every direction.

He was choosing where his energy went.

“You don’t need a new environment. You need a new way of showing up in the one you’re in.”

Reflect on This

Take a moment and think about your last few days.

How much of your experience was shaped by what happened?

And how much was shaped by how you responded to it?

That distinction changes everything.

You Don’t Have to Become Everything You Experience

This is not about controlling everything around you. It’s not about pretending that things don’t affect you.

It’s about recognizing something simple but powerful.

You don’t have to carry everything you come into contact with and you don’t have to wait for things to feel right to be at your best.

You can bring that with you.

Try This Today

Choose one moment where you would normally react. It could be a conversation, a decision, or a situation that typically pulls you.

Before it happens, decide how you are going to show up.

Then follow through.

If things become tense, stay steady, if things become negative, don’t feed into it and if things are going well, don’t just enjoy it. Add to it.

Be more present. Be more intentional. Bring more clarity.

Then notice what shifts, not just around you, but within you.

Final Thought

The moment you stop reacting to what’s happening and start deciding how you move through it, you take your power back.

You no longer just experience your environment, you influence it.

You don’t just feel energy, you direct it.

“You’re not just living your life. You’re shaping the way it feels.”
