Episode 26: You Can Be in Any Stage at Any Age

The other day I was on the phone with my oldest brother.

We were doing what we always do. Starting with something ordinary and somehow ending up in a conversation about the architecture of life itself. We talk about patterns. Timing. Energy. Why clarity seems to arrive in waves.

At one point he paused and asked something simple.

“How does all of this apply to someone my age?”

It was curiosity, not doubt.

And I loved that question.

Because somewhere along the way, we absorbed the idea that growth belongs to youth. That reinvention is for the ambitious twenty-something. That purpose peaks early and then slowly declines.

But that’s not how life works.

“You can be in any stage at any age.”

And once you understand that, everything shifts.

The Lie of the Linear Life

We were taught to think life moves in a straight line.

Graduate.
Establish yourself.
Climb.
Maintain.
Slow down.

If you’re not following that script, it can feel like you are behind.

But growth isn’t linear.

It’s cyclical.

You don’t finish becoming.

You layer.

“Growth does not check your age before it arrives. It checks your willingness.”

Neuroscience confirms that the brain remains capable of learning and adaptation across the lifespan. Identity continues evolving. Meaning continues forming. Contribution continues deepening.

There is no expiration date on expansion.

Expansion: The Stretch

Expansion is curiosity in motion.

It’s the internal whisper that says, what if?

For some, expansion looks bold. Starting a business. Writing a book. Changing careers.

For others, it is quieter. Taking a class. Learning something new. Having the conversation you have been avoiding.

Expansion is not about scale.

It’s about stretch.

“Sometimes expansion is not flipping your life upside down. Sometimes it is simply refusing to shrink.”

When expansion is ignored, restlessness creeps in. Energy stagnates. Irritation replaces inspiration.

If you feel a stretch waiting, that’s not foolishness.

It’s aliveness.

Integration: The Refinement

Integration is precision.

It’s when you look around and ask, what actually matters now?

Sometimes integration means stepping away from something impressive but misaligned. Other times it’s as simple as saying no more often.

Integration is not retreat.

It’s alignment.

“Integration is courage in reverse. It’s the bravery to let go.”

This stage often arrives quietly. A subtle heaviness. A sense that something no longer fits.

Not because you failed.

Because you evolved.

Contribution: The Outward Flow

Contribution shifts the focus from self advancement to shared impact.

It doesn’t require a spotlight.

It may look like mentoring. Leading. Building.

Or it may look like showing up steadily for your family. Supporting a friend. Sharing hard earned wisdom.

“Contribution doesn’t require a stage. It requires presence.”

When contribution is neglected, you can feel invisible. Underused. Disconnected.

That’s not decline.

That’s unused wisdom waiting for expression.

Growth Does Not Retire

When I think about that phone call, what stood out was not age.

It was clarity.

The steadiness. The lack of urgency to prove anything. The ability to see patterns quickly.

That’s not decline.

That’s refinement.

“Growth later in life is often quieter, but it is no less powerful.”

Younger listeners need to hear this too.

There is no prize for rushing your becoming.

You are not behind.

You are layering.

The Question That Changes Everything

If you take nothing else from this, take this shift.

Stop asking:

Am I where I should be by this age?

Start asking:

“What stage am I in right now, and am I honoring it?”

That question removes comparison.

It removes artificial timelines.

It returns you to alignment.

You can be expanding in your career while integrating in your relationships. You can be contributing to your community while expanding in your creativity.

Human beings are layered.

That complexity isn’t confusion.

It’s growth.

You Are Still Becoming

Right now, in this season of your life, what are you learning?

Not what you mastered years ago.

What are you learning today?

“As long as you are learning, you are still becoming.”

And becoming is not tied to a number.

It’s tied to awareness and courage.

It’s tied to your willingness to stay awake to your own evolution.
